I spend quite a bit of my free time reading, journaling, blogging and studying. I use pretty basic tools such as highlighters, ink pens and stickies to take notes and highlight important passages. My issue was where and how to store my tools in a way that kept them organized and close at hand. When you live in a small house, every space counts. Winter and Summer months have different needs. In the winter months bigger bulkier items tend to build up until spring comes and we can stow it all away again. If we don't stay organized, then utter clutter chaos ensues.
A desk is not an option for me. Sitting for any length of time, since the wreck, is not comfortable for me. I am looking for a portable adjustable standing desk that will fit in my home, but most of them are rather large or require some type of countertop space. I use my kitchen table as a desktop when I need one, but I can't keep my stuff on the table while preparing or eating meals.
I use my bed and a box as a standing desk area. The bedroom is also a great place to be when I need to have a quiet space. I sometimes play classical music to drown out the background noise from other parts of the house so I can focus. It helps to keep the distractions down to a minimum. The living room has the best light for reading during the day. With all that being said, I needed a portable storage container of some sort that was pleasant to the eye.
I have tried several types of storage containers, but my favorites are the multi-use decorative types if it is going to be in plain sight. If I were going to store say a sewing kit, I would use a simple plastic storage container with a lid to store it somewhere out of sight.
At first, I tried a small bowl made out of aspen with a leather accent. I enjoy using this bowl in my home. I figured that I could easily carry it around to my various study areas, but it was too small, so I switched it out with a little larger basket with handles that would fit all my needs and still look nice. I am pleased with how well it turned out.
We do not have extra space to store unusable items. Years ago, before we had a small home, we stopped buying items that did not serve a purpose other than collecting dust. If an item does not serve us, we do not purchase it. We all tend to hang on to our stuff with a tight grip. We are no different. After 36 years of marriage, we too have collected and inherited items that we don't want to let go of. I completely understand. I certainly did not want to a rent storage unit, with the best intensions to only rent it until (Fill in the blank) ____ to store my excess stuff that would be soon forgotten never to be seen again. It was best for us to not purchase unusable things in the first place. Many people who do choose to rent end up paying more in rent than the stored items are worth. Imagine the impact we would have if we gave away some of our nice excess stuff to those who are just starting out or who have been displaced for one reason or another? Hmm, food for thought, but I digress...
