Remote Living - Does Age Matter?

We once had a realtor tell us that she did not tell us about certain properties that we had found online because they were not close enough to a hospital. In her mind, she had determined what we wanted and needed based on her own fears. We were astounded by her proclamation.

This then begs the question, "Does age matter?" For us, it does not matter, but we are not ignorant of the fact that life can change in an instant. Unfortunately, as people age, they lose confidence in their abilities, physical health declines and fear sets in. The roots of these feelings are usually caused by health scares, losses and/or incidences that have caused them trauma.  As we age the size of our world shrinks and our losses stack up. Familiarity and structure help to calm anxiety, but they can also keep new experiences at bay.

I cannot pretend that it wasn't easier to homestead when we were first married. This lifestyle was always our goal. This is our second off-grid remote home. We built the first one by ourselves one day a week. We both worked 6 days a week and it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive there from our in-town home. Once we moved there, we still worked in town five days a week. The work was harder and so was the road there, but we thrived.

Solar capabilities have advanced in the last few decades. Powering a modern home is now possible which makes life off grid a lot easier. Our home is just like a home in town. We do have to watch our power consumption during cloudy days, but for the most part we run whatever we need within reason.

We have not completed our goals as far as sustainability and gardening. One of those life changes I spoke of earlier has complicated our life and set us way back. Hopefully, we will be able to move forward in these areas one day. Until then, we will continue living, learning and discovering new ways to prosper in this lifestyle.

We only had two solar panels when we first started living here.

We are still in awe of the wild beauty of this place.

The possibilities are endless.

The harvest is great.

Our first chickens.

By the grace of God, we will continue to live, grow and thrive in our remote humble abode with thanksgiving and gratefulness.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” 9 So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. Deuteronomy 31:8-9

The Cost Of Remote Living...

We have had to go to town every day for the last three days. Ugh! This isn't the city, but the closest town to us that has grocery stores and a Walmart. We have been topping the gas tank off at a convenient store that has been offering really discounted gas prices. Usually, they price gouge their neighbors to death. It cost us $15.47 to travel to town each day for a total of $46.41. Ouch!!!

This is one of the main reasons that I choose to shop for fresh items and run errands once a month, have as much as I can shipped for free and shop for staples in the city, which is farther away, every three months that can't be shipped.

It costs about $7 each time that we have to go to the Post Office. Just imagine how much it costs to travel for these basic reasons when gas was $5 a gallon. Gas was that high about two weeks ago.
