Happenings...

Shabbat Shalom!

We recently planted lettuce, spinach, kale and strawberries in planters. We also planted the root end of green onions that we had used in cooking. I also had some growing in water that I cut the ends off about 1/4 inch from the roots and planted. All of the onions came up and are growing like weeds. The lettuce and spinach are up too. The strawberry plants are also starting to peek out. The kale isn't breaking through the soil yet. I also planted mint from a start that I put in water to grow roots. Not that I needed anymore mint, but I love plants. I would like to get some potatoes planted, but we really need a raised bed to plant them in due to our very short growing season. It is still too cool at night to leave the planters outside.

The heat only comes on a couple of times early in the mornings now. We are still in-between seasons. Warm clothes are too warm and spring clothes are too cool to wear. That doesn't seem to stop Number One from wearing shorts.

We have a new buffalo calf at the ranch that adjoins our property. It is so cute and keeps the whole herd busy running after it. It's too early for the Pronghorn to give birth, but it won't be very long. The ground squirrels are active and busy building their nests. Everything is really active right now. We have had a very mild winter. A hummingbird showed up at the feeder today. Number One saw it, but I haven't had the pleasure yet. I have been buzzed by it twice now.

We have had a couple of visits from a very grumpy bear. He has a roaring growl that sends fear into the night. We had a heavy wet snow early in the morning yesterday, so I was able to find his print from last night's encounter this morning. The other prints were not as clear due to the snow melting all night. We could definitely see his path. We know that he is a he from the wildlife officer that set up a deterrent for him last year. Last year he did damage to our fence around the chickens when he crawled over the fence. The gate was open, but he went over the top anyway. He also broke into our metal trash can and spread the trash around. We changed up the way we do things, so he has not had a free meal from us this time. He did this under the cover of a thunderstorm. It was storming again when he showed up the last couple of times.

Our friend went home from the hospital yesterday. He had a procedure done and hopefully he will recover soon. Thank you for all of your prayers. Thank God for hearing and answering!

Mrs. Smith
