The Heat is On! Winter Weather...

It's been in the low 20's in the mornings for the past week. There was a thick layer of ice in the chicken's water this morning. We have gone below our threshold of 55 degrees inside the house, so we checked to make sure both heaters were in working order and turned one on for a short time to take the chill out of the air. The pilot light has kept the house at a steady temperature throughout the day. We didn't make it to our goal of November 1st before turning on the heat. Wishful thinking, I guess. We usually only make it to the second or third week of October.

The forecast looks wet and cold for the foreseeable future. There will be no morning sun warming up the house through the windows. It will be a little warmer at night due to the cloud coverage, but much colder during the day. We are grateful because we desperately need the moisture.

We took a drive this afternoon. We just wanted to get out of the house. We ended up in town, so we picked up a few items from the grocery store that were on sale like apples for .99 cents a pound and $2.49 for a pound of butter. I just happened across a sale while heading to the cash register on uncured Teton Grass Fed Beef Kielbasa for $2.12. The Kielbasa is normally $8.49. That made it $2.65 a pound for good grass-fed beef sausage. I couldn't pass it up. In fact, I asked Number One Husband to go back inside to buy all they had. We ended up with 5.25 pounds. Our freezer is now topped off for the winter months ahead.

While Number One Husband was in the store, I saw a bumper sticker on a vehicle that backed in beside us. I asked the owner if I could take a picture. He obliged me and we had a good unspoken laugh about the sticker. I guess it was particularly funny to me since I drank a large hot cup of tea on the way to town and I really needed to pee.

We had a nice drive through a forested area that has beautiful free campgrounds. The Forest Service had just completed fire mitigation and added nice iron fire pits to each site. The small dirt paths go for miles and miles through the backwoods. We have been trying to find a new map for the roads, but they have been out for months. The map is huge because the area is so large. It makes it a little difficult to use in the car without tearing it. Our map is well worn and is torn on some of the seams where it folds together. It's easy to get a little lost even though we frequently visit the area. Maybe we will find one next year...

Stay safe,

Mrs. Smith
